The safest countries in Asia at the time of writing are Bhutan, Brunei, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Uzbekistan. These nine destinations sit at the top of the ranked table above because the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada align on their baseline advice for travelers, with no regional warnings or elevated national cautions attached.
At Safe to Go, we compare official assessments every day so travelers can separate isolated border risks from nationwide concerns. National guidance can change when regional tensions, armed conflict, or natural hazards arise.

How the Asian Safety Ranking Works
This ranking measures government travel advisories rather than local crime statistics or municipal policing counts. Official advisories from the United States Department of State, the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), and the Government of Canada evaluate risks that threaten foreign visitors directly. These threats include political unrest, armed conflict, kidnapping, and natural disasters.
To establish the order shown in the ranked table above, we evaluate the United States baseline level first, then cross-reference specific regional warnings published by the United Kingdom, followed by national caution levels set by Canada. A destination where all three governments issue their baseline guidance sits above a destination where one government urges elevated caution.
The ranked table above recalculates these positions daily as the three governments update their advice.
Countries at the Top of the Asian Ranking
The nine countries tie at the top at the time of writing, so the ranked table above lists them alphabetically.
The official Japan travel advisory instructs visitors to exercise normal precautions. United States citizens traveling abroad are directed to use standard safety habits, while United Kingdom authorities advise against no areas and Canada advises normal security precautions. Read our detailed breakdown on whether Japan is safe to explore city-level precautions.
The Singapore travel advisory confirms that Singapore is generally a safe destination for travelers. Authorities maintain baseline advisory guidance across all three issuing foreign ministries.
The Taiwan travel advisory highlights environmental hazards, reminding travelers of risks from earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, flooding, and extreme heat. The South Korea travel advisory notes that tensions on the Korean Peninsula remain high as North Korea conducts missile launches, while large-scale demonstrations can disrupt transit. Learn more in our overview on whether South Korea is safe for tourists.
- The Bhutan travel advisory and Brunei travel advisory advise normal precautions for foreign visitors.
- The Kazakhstan travel advisory, Mongolia travel advisory, and Uzbekistan travel advisory also advise normal precautions.
Why Popular Tourist Hubs Rank Lower Than Expected
Popular holiday hubs frequently rank below remote destinations due to localized hazards or differing ministry assessments. Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia place outside the top nine Asian spots in the ranked table above.
The Vietnam travel advisory states that Vietnam is generally a safe destination where petty crime is common in tourist locations. However, Canada advises travelers to exercise a high degree of caution nationally, and United States officials warn of unmarked landmines and unexploded ordnance near construction sites. Read our guide asking is Vietnam safe for the full Vietnam advice.
The Malaysia travel advisory cautions travelers regarding islands and maritime areas off Eastern Sabah from Kudat to Tawau due to kidnapping risks. The United Kingdom FCDO specifically advises against all but essential travel to parts of Malaysia, placing the country in thirteenth position.
The Thailand travel advisory notes risks near the Thai-Cambodian border due to armed conflict, alongside unrest in Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat provinces. Because the United Kingdom FCDO advises against all but essential travel to parts of the country and Canada recommends high caution, Thailand lands in fourteenth position.
Regional Warnings Inside Asian Countries
A lower rank does not always mean a warning covers the whole country. In many Asian nations, warnings apply only to specific border zones or regional provinces.
For example, Cambodia, Bangladesh, and Laos sit between twenty-third and twenty-sixth position because the United Kingdom FCDO advises against all but essential travel to parts of each nation. Similarly, India and the Philippines rank in twenty-fifth and twenty-seventh place because United Kingdom authorities advise against all travel to specific domestic regions.
Who This Safety Ranking Does Not Serve
This ranking does not serve travelers heading to the islands off Eastern Sabah in Malaysia, or to Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat provinces in Thailand. It also does not serve anyone planning a trip to Myanmar, North Korea or Afghanistan, where Canada says to avoid all travel.
Our assessment would shift if the United Kingdom FCDO drops its advice against all but essential travel to parts of Malaysia or Thailand, or if Canada lowers its national advisory levels for Southeast Asian nations. Travelers preparing departures should monitor the latest advisory changes to verify that no new territorial warnings have taken effect.
