The US State Department says to reconsider travel to Israel due to terrorism and unrest, and Canada says to avoid non-essential travel. The US says do not travel to parts of the north or to areas near Gaza and the Egypt border, due to armed conflict. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to parts of the north, the Gaza border area and three West Bank governorates.
At Safe to Go, we translate advisory language into decisions for travelers. The UK FCDO says missile and drone attacks are a risk throughout Israel, and the US says regional tensions can cause airlines to cancel or limit flights.
Where the Travel Warnings Concentrate Across Israeli Territory
The US and UK warnings concentrate on the north, the area around Gaza and, for the US, the Egypt border. The US State Department warns travelers not to travel to areas north of Route 85 to Route 90 south to Route 87 due to armed conflict. The Israeli authorities also restrict civilian movement north of those routes due to Israeli Defense Forces presence and activity. The United States also tells citizens to stay clear of the area within 11.3 kilometers, or 7 miles, of the Gaza Strip, and within 2.4 kilometers, or 1.5 miles, of the Israel-Egypt border, except at the Taba border crossing, also known as the Menachem Begin crossing.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office publishes its own boundary lines for northern Israel and the occupied Golan Heights. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to areas north of Route 89 between Nahariyya and Dalton, north of a straight eastward line from Dalton to Route 91, and north of Route 91 across the Golan Heights, excluding routes 89 and 91 themselves. It also advises against all travel within 500 meters of the border with Syria along the Alpha Line, Sheba’a Farms, Ghajjar, and within 500 meters of the Gaza border. In the West Bank, the UK advises against all travel to Tulkarm Governorate, Jenin Governorate, and Tubas Governorate except Route 90.
For the rest of the West Bank, the UK advises against all but essential travel. It carves out specific exceptions: East Jerusalem, Bethlehem Governorate, Ramallah Municipality, Jericho Municipality and all areas south of it, including the Allenby crossing. Highway 1 connecting Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, along with areas south and west including Highway 3, plus Route 443 and Highway 45, are also excluded from the broader West Bank non-essential warning.
Risks Visitors Face from Rocket Fire and Attacks on Transport
Visitors face security risks led by missile fire, drone attacks, and violent public clashes. Following regional fighting involving Lebanese Hizballah, Iran, and the Houthis in Yemen, rocket and drone launches remain an active threat throughout Israeli airspace. The UK FCDO says shrapnel from intercepted missiles can fall across Israel and Palestine, and two drones fired by the Houthis fell in Eilat, injuring at least 20 people.
Public demonstrations and sudden unrest can emerge quickly in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, occasionally disrupting road access to Ben Gurion Airport. The UK FCDO says demonstrations are frequent in the Old City of Jerusalem around Damascus Gate, Herod’s Gate, Lion’s Gate and the Chain Gate, especially after Friday prayers, and some have led to violent clashes. If merchants in the Old City souks suddenly pull down their shop shutters, tension is rising and you must leave the area immediately.
The UK FCDO reports that three bombs exploded on three buses in the Tel Aviv area, with no casualties, and that there have been a number of violent incidents on and near public transport in Jerusalem. The UK FCDO advises extra care on public transport in both cities, and for buses in the greater Tel Aviv area it says to consider other forms of transport.
- Rocket and drone debris: Take shelter immediately inside a designated residential shelter or windowless stairwell when warning sirens sound.
- Airport access blockages: Monitor regional demonstration notices that could block highway corridors leading into Ben Gurion Airport.
Comparing Assessments from the United States, Britain, and Canada
The three governments differ at the national level. The US says to reconsider travel to Israel, Canada says to avoid non-essential travel, and the UK FCDO names the areas it advises against. The US State Department sets strict geographic mile markers, barring official US personnel and warning citizens away from the 7-mile perimeter around Gaza and the 1.5-mile strip along the Egyptian border. American government personnel also face strict movement limits requiring embassy security office approval to enter areas north of Route 85, Route 90, and Route 87.
The Government of Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel to Israel, with separate regional advisories. Canada notes updated health guidance from the Public Health Agency of Canada, while the US advisory summary also added a health risk indicator for Gaza.
The UK FCDO draws its lines along named roads, such as Routes 89 and 91 in the north, and separates areas it advises against all travel to from areas it advises against all but essential travel to. The UK notes that an advisory against travel can invalidate your travel insurance policy if you enter restricted zones against official guidance. To weigh Israel against another trip, compare destinations side by side.
Preparing for Shelter Alerts and Flight Cancellations
Traveling under current conditions requires specific defensive preparation before departing home. United States citizens should register through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. British travelers should sign up for UK FCDO travel advice email alerts and review official instructions on preparing for a crisis abroad, which includes maintaining emergency supplies and keeping passport documents completely current.
Air travel remains vulnerable to sudden regional closures. Keep your departure plans under review, ensure travel documents are up to date, and verify whether your travel insurance policy remains valid given your home government’s advisory text. Review our free travel safety checklist before departure.
If you are advised to take shelter, follow instructions from local authorities. Local directives instruct travelers to locate a residential protected space (known locally as Mamad, Mamak, or Maman) or a communal bomb shelter. If you cannot reach a designated shelter when sirens sound, move immediately to an interior stairwell away from windows and exterior walls, waiting until local authorities confirm the threat has cleared.
Tracking Live Alert Feeds and Ground Instructions
The UK FCDO says the situation could escalate quickly and that regional tensions may cause air and land borders to close. Israel’s Home Front Command provides direct civil defense instructions, protective shelter guidelines, and alerts on rocket activity.
You should also monitor international news and local media reports for sudden airport disruptions or airspace closures. The panel above shows today’s level for each reviewing foreign ministry, and you can view latest advisory changes across destinations. If regional tensions escalate or a foreign ministry broadens its do-not-travel perimeter deeper into central districts, our verdict would change toward a complete nationwide travel warning.
Travelers Who Should Cancel or Postpone Trips
Israel is a poor fit for a sightseeing trip that cannot absorb a cancelled flight or time in a shelter, because Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel and the UK FCDO warns of airspace closures and falling shrapnel. If that is your trip, postpone it or choose another destination. Travelers heading to northern areas will encounter Israeli authority travel restrictions and direct government warnings against all travel.
