Guadalajara is not among the areas the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against, though the UK does warn against parts of Jalisco state outside the city. The US State Department says to exercise increased caution in Mexico because of terrorism, crime, and kidnapping, and Canada says to exercise a high degree of caution.

At Safe to Go, we track daily government updates so you can separate municipal conditions from broader regional security alerts. For Guadalajara, that means knowing which parts of Jalisco the UK warns against: the areas south and south-west of Lake Chapala, and a list of northern municipalities.

What Travel Advisories Say About Guadalajara and Jalisco

The UK FCDO names parts of Jalisco to avoid but does not list Guadalajara. The US State Department warns travelers to exercise increased caution in Mexico due to crime, kidnapping, and terrorism, noting that conditions vary widely from state to state and within individual states. While the national advisory applies to the city, the United States government maintains strict rules for its personnel that regular tourists are urged to follow.

The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to parts of Jalisco, but Guadalajara is not on its list. Specifically, the UK government advises against all but essential travel to areas south and south-west of Lake Chapala to the border with Colima, as well as specific northern municipalities in Jalisco including Colotlán, Mezquitic, and Hostotipaquillo. The UK office also issued a warning for tropical storm Simon, which is forecast to intensify to a major hurricane, bringing heavy rain to the regions surrounding Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.

Canada instructs visitors to exercise a high degree of caution in Mexico, accompanied by regional advisories. Because conditions shift, the panel above shows today’s level for each government, refreshed daily.

How Guadalajara Compares with Neighboring States and Corridors

The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to all or parts of several Mexican states. For a national overview, review our guide on is Mexico safe to see how different regions compare.

Within Jalisco itself, the UK explicitly advises against non-essential travel to northern municipalities like Bolaños, Chimaltitán, Huejúcar, Huequilla el Alto, San Martin de Bolaños, Santa Maria de los Ángeles, Totatiche, and Villa Guerrero. Driving out of Guadalajara can take you into these areas, and the UK FCDO says your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against its advice.

  • State of Zacatecas: The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel across the entire state.
  • State of Colima: The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel except to the city of Manzanillo reached by sea or air.
  • State of Guanajuato: The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to areas south-west of road 45D.
  • State of Michoacán: The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel except to Morelia and Pátzcuaro reached by specific toll roads.

Street Risks and Personal Precautions in the City

The UK FCDO says crime is a risk to foreign nationals in Mexico, particularly in major cities and tourist resort areas. The US State Department notes that violent crimes, including homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, sexual assault, and robbery, take place across the country.

The UK FCDO says pickpocketing and theft are common, including on public transport, and advises watching your luggage even in apparently secure places like a hotel lobby. Foreigners should avoid wearing expensive-looking clothing, jewellery, or watches, and keep credit cards and cash to a minimum.

Both food and drink spiking have occurred in bars and restaurants, leading to robbery and assault. The UK advisory highlights that tainted alcohol containing methanol has caused severe illness, blackouts, and deaths across Mexico. Never leave drinks unattended, and seek guidance from your tour operator or local authorities if you have concerns.

Getting Around Guadalajara Safely by Road and Air

US government staff in Mexico may not travel between cities after dark, and the US State Department strongly advises US citizens to follow the same rule. Travelers should avoid traveling alone, especially in remote areas. Emergency services are limited or unavailable in remote or rural areas.

US government staff in Mexico must use dispatched vehicles from regulated taxi stands or app-based ride services, and may not wave down taxis on the street. The US State Department strongly advises US citizens to do the same.

If you encounter a road checkpoint, comply. The US State Department explicitly warns that fleeing or ignoring checkpoint instructions can result in being hurt or killed. Stay alert for criminals posing as police officers attempting to extort drivers, particularly those in rental cars. If genuine police try to fine you for a minor traffic offence, do not hand over money or your passport. Ask for a copy of the fine, which is payable later, ask for ID, and try to note the officer’s name, badge number, and patrol car number.

Political demonstrations can happen across Mexico and can be tense, confrontational, and potentially violent. The UK FCDO warns that onlookers can easily be drawn into unrest during street actions. Foreign visitors should monitor local news, stay clear of large political gatherings, and immediately leave the area if a protest begins forming nearby.

Mexican law strictly prohibits foreign nationals from participating in political activities. If you join demonstrations, the Mexican authorities may detain and deport you.

If you become a victim of a crime in Guadalajara, you must report the event immediately to the nearest state prosecutor’s office, known as the Agencia del Ministerio Público. A criminal investigation cannot occur without an in-person, formal complaint filed before you depart Mexico.
