The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) reports that severe flooding is affecting parts of Thailand following heavy rainfall in several provinces, including Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, and Samut Prakan. All 50 districts of Bangkok have been declared disaster-affected areas, creating potential travel disruption, road closures, and localized water accumulation in low-lying spots.
Regarding personal safety, the UK FCDO notes that violent crime, including gun crime, rarely involves tourists in Thailand. However, the agency notes that several foreign nationals were victims of gun violence in Bangkok in 2018. Their guidance instructs travelers to take care in unfamiliar areas and avoid walking alone through isolated spots, particularly late at night. How Bangkok Compares with Regional Warnings Across Thailand
The UK FCDO areas to avoid in Thailand are parts of the south near the Thailand-Malaysia border and areas within 20km of the land border with Cambodia, and Bangkok is in neither.
The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to southern areas near the Thailand-Malaysia border, specifically Pattani Province, Yala Province, Narathiwat Province, and the districts of Chana, Thepa, Na Thawi, and Saba Yoi in southern Songkhla Province. The agency also advises against all but essential travel on the Hat Yai to Padang Besar train line due to regular attacks. Martial law remains active across most areas in these southern border provinces, granting security forces broader investigative and enforcement powers. The US State Department similarly urges increased caution in Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat due to the risk of unrest.
Along the Thailand-Cambodia border, the UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to areas within 20km of the land boundary. Fighting broke out along parts of the border in July 2025, and further clashes in early December involved rocket and artillery fire. Land crossings are suspended, and temples near the border are closed, including the Khao Phra Wihan Preah Vihear temple. The FCDO says there are unexploded landmines in the area.
Street Crime, Drink Spiking, and City Scams in Bangkok
The UK FCDO cautions travelers to carry valuables and cash securely to guard against pickpocketing, and to beware of bag-snatchers on motorbikes.
The UK FCDO notes that automated teller machine (ATM) skimming occurs, instructing visitors to use ATMs located inside bank branches and shield their personal identification number (PIN) from view. During card transactions, never let your bank card leave your sight. In addition, never hand over your physical passport as a security guarantee when hiring transport equipment, as rental operations sometimes retain passports over disputed damage claims.
The UK FCDO says drink spiking and drug-assisted sexual assault happen in tourist areas around Thailand, with male and female victims. Do not leave drinks unattended or accept drinks from strangers. The UK FCDO warns that drinks in Thai bars are often stronger than those served in the UK, increasing vulnerability to robbery and assault. In addition, alcoholic drinks containing methanol have caused deaths and severe illnesses in Thailand. Seek urgent medical attention if you or someone you are travelling with show the signs of methanol poisoning after drinking.
- Secure your valuables to protect against pickpockets and motorbike bag-snatchers.
- Use bank-based ATMs and shield your PIN to avoid card skimming devices.
- Never surrender your original passport to rental companies as a deposit.
- Monitor international media and airline alerts if Middle East airspace closures disrupt connecting flights.
Tuk-Tuk and Night Transport Precautions in Bangkok
The UK FCDO explicitly warns travelers to take care when traveling in open transport like tuk-tuks.
The UK FCDO recommends pre-arranging your transport home from entertainment venues so you do not have to accept rides from unlicensed vehicles. On buses and trains, the UK FCDO advises against sleeping, because people have had items taken from their bags while asleep. The UK FCDO says carrying cannabis out of Thailand is illegal, and British nationals have been caught carrying it, including while transiting through other countries. Many international airports have advanced technology and security to screen baggage, and anyone caught faces arrest or fines.
